They make different beers, but the Yorkshire Pudding Ale is the one that has taken off.
Another successful start-up on the market is Elissa and Martin Bennett’s Reet Good Food. Martin began the business after he was made redundant in Covid. The preserves sold well, and Elissa left her job in business development at Northern Rail to help take the concern to the next level.
“We now employ a couple of cooks. Everything is made from scratch using as much local produce as possible and the business is doing well selling at markets and to garden centres and shops,” Elissa said.
“This is our first time on a market,” she said. “Mark approached us at an event at
that the quality of the produce and products are good, but the marketing is not always up to the same standard. That was some-thing we could help them with.”
The market built up a solid core of anchor traders and success breeds success. Mark visited other markets and food festivals to persuade suitable traders to try Malton, and word spread that the monthly market was a great place to trade.
Gradually artisan craft businesses signed up and the market now has a 75 per cent to 25 per cent mix, which Mark is happy with.
He tries to be fair about the number of each similar line trading on the market, and there are few complaints among the traders who say it is a market they enjoy and where they do well.
The market has now grown to 45 stalls clustered across the Market Place in front of St Michael’s Church.
The quality and mix of stalls are impres- sive and traders include stand-out award- winning businesses.
Howard Kinder, who runs Malton Brewery is a winner of Aldi’s The Next Big Thing. He started the brewery in 2018 and began making a Yorkshire Pudding beer in 2019. The first bottle was sold in 2020 and since then they have sold more than a quarter of a million bottles.
“We sell at a lot of food festivals and the Aldi award got us quite well known,” Howard said. “The brewery is just across the road, so it is easy to stand this monthly market,” he added.
