For generations Bradford Kirkgate Market was a mighty presence in the city. But in their wisdom the city fathers decided it should be demolished to make way for a new Arndale shopping centre, which would house the market. It was pulled down in 1973, but not before impassioned protests and petitions to try and save the building.

There will be a series of interlocking umbrellas to create a covered area for pop-up markets and events. Below the market square there is a large underground area for trader deliveries, additional storage and waste recycling.
When the new market finally opens, Bradford’s two existing markets will close and many of the traders will move to the new building. The council says there is already a waiting list of traders wanting to stand the new market.
Amid all the modernity, there will be a remnant of history. Two sets of highly decorative entrance gates from the original Bradford Kirkgate Market have been restored and installed at the site.
Coun Alex Ross-Shaw, the council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said”: “Getting to this stage is a major milestone in this once in a generation regeneration project. We’re now moving into the fit-out stage, working with traders to ensure the
stalls they are moving to are of a high standard and meet the needs of their business.”
Everyone is hoping that Darley Street Market will be open in time to reap some of the benefits of Bradford being awarded the accolade of being UK City of Culture 2025
